Rafael Kayanan: Art Blog

 STAGE 3

Whole image.

Detail.

Tweaked some shadows, and added some white paint to some sections.

I'll add the original Robert E. Howard Red Sonya image I did in the future.
It's truer to the way Howard's character was depicted in SHADOWS OF THE VULTURE.
The one above is the version Roy Thomas created, with the sparse chain mail design similar to Esteban Maroto's depiction. This one existed in the Marvel comic book version and is now making a comeback for Dynamite Entertainment.

Fun to do for kicks...

 POWER OF MYTH

This one refers to the long forgotten skirmishes several hundred years ago between Conquistadors and Indigenous tribes on the islands which were first named LAZARUS by Magellan, and 21 years later re-named as the PHILIPPINES by Villalobos.

What were they really fighting for, and who really ' won ' ?

The image was printed in a collection featuring stories and art by various Filipino talents, titled SIGLO: PASSION by the company Nautilus Comics.

SIGLO:PASSION

I'm in the middle of a script retelling the voyage of Magellan and the Visayan King, CiLapu Lapu. It's a harrowing tale that I have been seriously researching for the past decade, or so. Less fantastical as the above image, but much more engaging in so many ways.

 STAGE 2

Started adding some ink lines on the drawing. I lightboxed the original rough on a better quality sheet of bristol (90 lb). Started fixing some of the anatomy a bit on the knees. Also, altered the face and hair so that it stayed closer to the character I interpreted as Sonja.

I'll be switching pens. The pen I was using wasn't responding too well on the sheet. I had to go over certain lines more than once to get the ink flowing.

Added more darks. Altered the sweep of the gesture of the figure by repositioning the sword arm. Starting to play with the bg elements.

 TRIBAL

Image referencing Filipino Tribal myths for a graphic novel idea.

Diwatas are spirits in the woods and these creatures are fused in a John Carpenter THING kinda way.
