 RAINY DAY

I often carry a small notepad to jot down ideas or quick doodles.
This wasn't one of those times. I only had a large envelope that I'd picked up at the post office.
Due to a sudden downpour, I ducked into this diner on Lexington Ave.
I noticed this old man in a dark coat, umbrella and hat walking out the glass doors
and then standing beneath the diner's awning.
The rain blurred out every detail beyond him.
He stood there for several minutes with umbrella in hand. Waiting.

I wonder if the old man is still around, the diner has been closed down for a few years.

 WITCH WOMAN

Page from an old Conan the Adventurer I drew and co-plotted. Big reveal of a heavily cloaked figure exposing the small demons who were torturing her . Some hold her down using their elaborate binding system, while another tattoos her.

 TEN YEARS

This is concept art used for a character called The Campaigner, that writer Fabian Nicieza redesigned for the Turok comic and video games. Fabian doodled a ballpoint pen rough of a villain who wore the scraps of costumes taken from various superheroes he'd defeated. If you're reading this Fabian - don't worry I won't upload your sketch.

I took the idea further and applied it to an assassin bug. Assassin bugs carry the shells of its prey on their backs. Then took it even further and had his body crawling with insects, utilizing their fluids for energy. The scraps of costumes were also incorporated, as well as tattered flags from various expeditions. Fabian liked the whole "gross out" factor, so it was approved.

Acclaim ended up asking me to create a turnaround of this character for possible action figure sculpts. That would have been rather cool, although it may possibly have been the toy with the most choking hazards on it.

I can't believe it's been ten years since Turok! ... whew...

 TOTH RIP

Above is one of many drawings I did years ago with Toth's work in mind.
If becoming a better artist is one's goal, then you will do yourself a great favor
to discover the work and writings of one Alex Toth.

Alex Toth would draw by equally utilizing the unmarked paper as much as the ink on it.
