 BRUSHPEN TWO

I picked up a rare book on ornate European Rapier hilts a few years ago and have
incorporated this swirled metallic helm design to many of my illustrations.

The sword's guard was created to protect the sword hand from getting cut,
while the open design kept the sword's weight in check. It seemed like a good idea
to create helms that had a similar open swirled design so that the warrior could have
better vision while still having some protection.

I then added large jewels which would be mounted on to the helms to serve as
a symbol of rank or class.

THE ART OF FIGHTING WITHOUT FIGHTING

Soomi Kim and Derek Nguyen's play "LeeGendary" showing at the Asian American Theater Festival here in Manhattan about martial arts superstar Bruce Lee received a positive review from critic Michael Criscuolo.

"Yin and Yang battle it out for control of martial arts legend Bruce Lee's soul in Soomi Kim and Derek Nguyen's excellent new play, Lee/gendary. Set inside the action movie superstar's mind, Lee/gendary takes the audience on a hallucinatory trek through its namesake's short but fast life as he tries to find a harmonious balance between fame and enlightenment (i.e., Yin and Yang). It's a fascinating journey that is punctuated in director Suzi Takahashi's production by a dynamic performance by Kim as Bruce Lee.

Wait a minute: a woman plays Bruce Lee? Oh, you betcha. And, let me tell you: she kicks ass..."

The final fight scene that I choreographed (on a rooftop...heh) garnered a short mention as well.

" Lee/gendary culminates in a spectacular fight scene in which
Lee must battle one of them—and, in essence, himself—quite literally to
the death."
